ETA: Kristinaq over at MamaDivas is hosting a great giveaway for FOUR of these tickets.

The great people over at One2One Network recently sent me an email offering all members of the network discounted tickets on a performance of Cirque du Soleil. I had to share it here, because going to Cirque du Soleil was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

My first experience with Cirque du Soleil was when I was treated by a friend’s father to a performance of Saltimbanco in 1994. I was mesmerized by it’s beauty and entrancing music. I was going through a rather rocky time with TWFKAMM, and life was not too kind. However, as the I watched the performance unfold, I was in heaven and I understood the look of true beauty.

Over the years I have watched as many showings of Cirque du Soleil on television. Unfortunately, it is not the same and I firmly believe that every one should see it live if possible. Just take a look at the videos and see just why you have to see it in person.

So, if you are in the NYC area or are planning to be in the area, why not take a trip to the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden, and witness the true art of Cirque du Soleil: WINTUK. It is about a young boy’s mission to discover snow. There are puppets, and lights. There are 50 performers and a huge trampoline and amazing music too.

Purchase your tickets to WINTUK at the WaMu Theater in Madison Square Garden TODAY! Click on this special One2One Network link to buy tickets. Be sure to enter ONE2ONE to ensure that you get the special 25% discount on tickets. Offer ends December 23 at 9 pm!

And if you haven’t, head over to ONE2ONE and become one of the Word-Of-Mouth Women in the network.
You know Rubik’s, right? The frustrating six-sided cubes with the different colors that demand to be grouped with their like-mates as quickly as possible. It’s the cube that Will Smith completes in no time as the lead in “Pursuit of Happyness”. I used to like this game a lot and have even completed one or two in my younger days. But my fond memories of Rubik’s were shattered upon attempting to play the various games in RUBIK’S WORLD.

Let’s talk graphics first. Amazing. The vibrant colors, the 3-D effects- they are alluring and mesmerizing. Despite getting frustrated with the actual games, I did not stop playing because I loved exploring the world and finding out what each building had in store.

And what was in store? The World is made up of several different games:

RUBIK’S Cube- The original, but now computerized, game as mentioned above.

Fit- Arranging the Cubies so that they fit through slots in the wall (like the US Game Show Hole in the Wall)

Switch- Free the Cubies by grouping like-colors in fives.

Guide- Guide the Cubies through a maze to their matching exits.

View- Make the patterns in order to clear the board.

Deconstruct- Kind of like Jenga.

Create- Make structures out of the Cubies

Compose- Create music

I know, it sounds like a lot. And it is. There are enough games to last a whole month, but I was so frustrated trying to figure out how to play them, that after trying three of them, I couldn’t take it anymore. The lack of directions made it hard to understand the games and at times, it seemed that there were a few glitches coding. While playing SWITCH I noticed that moves that were allowed previously were not allowed in the next level although there was no rhyme or reason to this. In addition, unless you read the on-screen, hard-to-read instructions, there was no easy way to figure out what to do. And let’s face it, if I- an adult was getting ticked-off, imagine what a child’s experience would be.

Don’t get me wrong, the concept wasn’t bad. The mini-games that I could figure out were fun and the ones that I couldn’t figure out had the potential to be great had I had more time and patience to play around. I think this game is definitely a great tool for brain-development and should not be written off, but I suggest you play one day before allowing a child to play so that you can explain what needs to be done.

I have had a lot of crap happen in my life and I am finally learning to deal with it and put it behind me, but I have not done it alone. And so, for this week’s 1000 Words Meme, I have decided to talk about the things that I am thankful for.

(1) My husband. I have had too many boyfriend’s but I have never understood true love- true compassion- and true acceptance until I have met him. We have been through so much together- good and bad- and no matter what happens, I know that he will always be there to celebrate, mourn, and learn together.

(2) My daughter. When I look at her I see the best that life has to offer. I know that she is a gift from the universe sent to help me understand that it gives back in ways that command hope and love. Mimi has completed our family and has given me a whole new outlook on life.

(3) My In-laws. Despite our sometimes rocky relationship, my in-laws have become the family that I longed for all my life. They have loved me unconditionally and have supported not just my relationship with their son, but me as a person. They have filled a void left by the death of my father and the coldness of my mother and I cherish them so much.

(4) The Disney Fab Nine. We meet for the first time online and then for at Disney and are now bonded. In the short time the I have known the fabulous nine, I have learned that when things get bad there are people who will pick you up and give you the support that you need to make it through the next minute. I have learned the no matter how alone we may feel in life, some one understands (Thank you Tanyetta and Yolanda). I learned that when you think that no one notices that you are a good person, there will be someone who will tell the world (Thank you Felicia). I have realized that life does not have to be as complicated as I make it (right Renee?) and that there is so much more than what others see (Thank you Michelle). I have learned that it’s OK to slow down and take a different path (JusticeJonesie- you are amazing) and that it’s also OK to take the world by storm (man you two energize me- Kim and Jennifer). And finally, I learned that when life gives you lemons, write about it and don’t hold back- and oh, my love of reading is nothing to be ashamed about (Mel, you inspire me to accept myself).

(5) True Friendship. Although she is living in another country now, Lorri is one the best people in the world. Her knack for getting it and trying to explain it to others makes me feel less isolated and odd. I don;t normally get along with women, but she is unlike most women I have ever met. Her compassion has given me faith in people.

(6) Maria Bailey. If you have not met her, please go introduce yourself. This savvy lady is pushing moms into the forefront of marketing and public relations. Maria is so dedicated to giving moms a voice that I would be surprised if we don;t see her on the cover of Forbes soon. In addition, she is a very cool person. Her sense of humor is refreshing and she definitely knows how to make dinner conversation delightful.

(7) Taking Risks. I decided to leave my full-time job and try my hand at web and print design. I am not doing too badly and am glad that i get to share some very valuable time with my daughter.

(8) Democratic victory. I am so happy that President-Elect Barack Obama won and that my country actually stepped up to the challenge. I am so happy to be alive for this change.

And finally, I wanted to share a poem that I love:

Thanksgiving Letter from Harry
by Carl Dennis

I guess I have to begin by admitting
I’m thankful today I don’t reside in a country
My country has chosen to liberate,
That Bridgeport’s my home, not Baghdad.
Thankful my chances are good, when I leave
For the Super Duper, that I’ll be returning.
And I’m thankful my TV set is still broken.
No point in wasting energy feeling shame
For the havoc inflicted on others in my name
When I need all the strength I can muster
To teach my eighth-grade class in the low-rent district.
There, at least, I don’t feel powerless.
There my choices can make some difference.

This month I’d like to believe I’ve widened
My students’ choice of vocation, though the odds
My history lessons on working the land
Will inspire any of them to farm
Are almost as small as the odds
One will become a monk or nun
Trained in the Buddhist practice
We studied last month in the unit on India.
The point is to get them suspecting the world
They know first hand isn’t the only world.

As for the calling of soldier, if it comes up in class,
It’s not because I feel obliged to include it,
As you, as a writer, may feel obliged.
A student may happen to introduce it,
As a girl did yesterday when she read her essay
About her older brother, Ramon,
Listed as “missing in action” three years ago,
And about her dad, who won’t agree with her mom
And the social worker on how small the odds are
That Ramon’s alive, a prisoner in the mountains.

I didn’t allow the discussion that followed
More time than I allowed for the other essays.
And I wouldn’t take sides: not with the group
That thought the father, having grieved enough,
Ought to move on to the life still left him;
Not with the group that was glad he hadn’t made do
With the next-to-nothing the world’s provided,
That instead he’s invested his trust in a story
That saves the world from shameful failure.

Let me know of any recent attempts on your part
To save our fellow-citizens from themselves.
In the meantime, if you want to borrow Ramon
For a narrative of your own, remember that any scene
Where he appears under guard in a mountain village
Should be confined to the realm of longing. There
His captors may leave him when they move on.
There his wounds may be healed,
His health restored. A total recovery
Except for a lingering fog of forgetfulness
A father dreams he can burn away.

I have talked in the past about having an unhealthy relationship with my mother, so I do not want to rehash that relationship other than to say that I have made the decision to sever all ties to her.

It’s hard to fathom- a daughter cutting her mother out of her life- but it has been something that I have known needed to happen for years. I became very sentimental when I was pregnant and when my in-laws ignored my wishes and invited her to baby shower, I decided to let bygones be bygones and allow her to be part of my life. Unfortunately, my decision to allow my mother back into my life r was exactly what I knew it to be: a mistake.

I know, how did we go from her giving me beautiful furniture to having no relationship at all? Well, all I can say is that with my mother this is the way it goes. But no more. I have to walk away because if I do not the damage that she continues to inflict on me will trickle down to my daughter and it is MY job to ensure that does not happen.

Our relationship has always been a ticking bomb and that bomb detonated a few days ago. No daughter should EVER have to endure being called names or be told that she is a horrible person because of mistakes that she may or may not have made as a child. No child should ever be made to feel inadequate because he/she has not submitted to the unbending demands of his/her parent. And yet, although this behavior is unacceptable, I listened as my mother called me a liar, a whore, a disappointment and a ton of other terms that I have discarded along with my relationship with her and the stupidity of my childhood.

I am writing this post to purge, but also to remind you that parents are supposed to love their children- unconditionally. Children will make mistakes but no 31 year-old should ever be expected to apologize for the mistakes of their past. No child should very know that their parent will side with strangers who make assumptions over their own children. No child should endure abuse from anyone- especially not those who are charged with protecting him or her.

My daughter is my world. She is my heart and I will protect her at all cost. I will never be the cause of her pain or suffering. I will not allow her to witness the unhealthy relationship that I have with my mother because it is toxic and I, we, are better than that.

I am free. It hurts, but I am a survivor.

I would be lying if I said that I understood my daughter’s fascination with seemingly simple toys. Her love of cardboard boxes and FedEx envelopes baffles me to no end, and yet, I was skeptical of the “Toddler Tote” by Lauri Toys when I received it in the mail. It consisted of nothing more than different geometric shapes and animals made out of rubber and 7 plastic pegs in a cardboard carrying case. And while the vivid colors were eye-catching, I had no clue that these items would be the answer to my WAH mommy prayers.

You see, I was hired to do some design work for a MAJOR event and it has required me to work around the clock for almost two weeks now. And because I work from home, this has proven to be a battle of wills between my two year old and my job. But the Toddler Tote rescued me from what would have probably ended with me screaming and crying in a heap on the floor as my daughter ran through the house naked and jumping on the furniture.

My daughter has been playing with this non-Made-in-China toy for hours on end. She names all of the shapes, colors, and animals. She pretends to fly a plane or swim with fish and has even counted all of the pieces. Her favorite activity and the one that makes her concentrate the most is trying to put the puzzle pieces back together. It has been amazing to watch.

From a Mommy perspective, The Toddler Tote is perfect for imaginative play, which is a skill that children, thanks to technology, don’t get to develop any more. And I love the simplicity of it as it is very easy to take it in the car or to the doctor’s office. I do wish, however, that it came in a better case. The cardboard cannot stand up to the roughness of my Toddler and I have had to put the pieces in a Zip-loc bag for storage.

All-in-all this is a great product and it gets the seal of approval from both all of us in my house.

My husband was out of the house today and the little one was napping, so I decided to do something that has needed to be done for the last 4-5 months- a pedicure. Thing is, my feet were so bad that I thought I would have to bring in the professionals. Unfortunately, now that we are a one income family, we can’t afford that kind of luxury. So, I decided to do my own pedicure.

Try this easy pedicure that uses most of the ingredients that you already have:

What You Need

Large plastic bowl: I find that the washbasins that you get in the hospital work perfectly so use that if you have one.

A medium size plastic storage containers or even a cereal bowl.

A coarse grain salt (sea salt - 16 oz or even Kosher salt)

Olive Oil

Baby Bath Soap I use the Johnson’s Bedtime Moisture Wash because I like the lavendar scent.

Pumice stone or something like it.

Cuticle Cutter

Nail Clippers

Two Towels

Several Paper towels

Warm Socks (I uses fleece socks)

Thick Lotion

Nail Polish remover if you need it.

Once you have all your ingredients, make a mixture of olive oil and salt. Use more salt than olive oils so that you have thick scrub. Combine soap and warm water in the basin and go sit. Remove nail polish now. Place pail on one towel and soak your feet for about 5 minutes (longer if you have really rough feet. Soaking softens your feet so that the dead, dry skin comes off. Using your oil/salt mixture scrub your feet in small, hard circles. Be sure to concentrate on the really rough spots like your heel. Make sure to also get your nail beds. Then using your cuticle cutter, get rid of those nasty dry cuticles. I also use a nail cleaner to get under my toe nails. Soak your feet again. Cut your toenails (not too short- don’t hurt yourself). When you are done, pat your feet dry and slap on your lotion. When it has dried, put your socks on and keep them on all day/night. And your done.

This treatments should last for about a week before you have to do it again.
