Top 10 Reasons I Can’t Stand Oprah

ETA: clarification to #4 at the suggestion of commenter Forrest Greene and to add #9 again.

1. She is a victim. Well, she plays the victim. Her career has followed the typical celebrity path: get famous, needs publicity, and “confesses” that she has been molested, had an abortion…etc. I’m not trying to take away from her pain, but I hat that your confession was strategically placed.

2. While she does many good deeds, it seems as if she does it to say, “hey, look what I did?” I love celebrities who give back to their communities, but I can’t stand those who do it because they themselves want praise.

3. She built a school in South Africa but not in North America where girls need help too. Yes, there are other countries in the world that need help, but Americans have an obligation to help out America- we need to fix our home before we dictate to others what they should be doing in theirs.

4. For someone who has so many opinions about parenting, she is not a parent and therefore her opinions are just as annoying as the perfect stranger who comes up to you in the store to tell you how to raise your child. I can read every book every written on a subject, but until I experience something first hand, I don’t really have legit knowledge have only theoretical knowledge of it.

5. Just because she says a book is good does not mean it is good. People, stop being sheep.

6. As a Black Woman I have to say that we do not have to support every Black person in the world. Why are you really supporting Obama? Do you REALLY believe in him, or are you putting the race before the thought?

7. She is searching to belong to something. It is so hard to listen to someone tell people to believe in themselves when the person saying it is obviosuly suffering from a low self-esteem themselves.

8. Her laugh. Enough said. Two words: Dr. Phil.

9. Two words: Dr. Phil.

10. Her favorite things list is filled with ridiculously expensive stuff and you should be ashamed because you were poor once and know what is like to long for things that you can’t afford and now you are making people feel like that.

I can’t stand Oprah, either. I guess it’s because she strikes me as incredibly vain, with little actual reason to feel that way. Smug, maybe, in a word.

I had to laugh out loud at your reason #9. That should be there twice.

I do want to make one nitpick. I’m not asking you to change it here, but in reason #4, where you say “…until I experience something first hand, I don’t really have legit knowledge,” I wonder if you’d agree with this revision: “…until I experience something first hand, I have only theoretical knowledge of it.”

This makes an appropriate distinction between first-hand experience & opinion, without delegitimizing opinion. One could say it allows for both rational thought & for emotional sense. I’m not totally sure why, but being told I’m not qualified to hold an opinion on a subject unless I’ve personally experienced it has always bugged me.

For instance, I’ve never been in armed combat, but I’m pretty sure the experience is hellacious.

    Anyhow, thanks & best wishes,

    Forrest Greene
